Getting Started

What is HeyWire?

HeyWire allows you to text in any language and works across multiple devices.

How does it work?

HeyWire to HeyWire texting is FREE worldwide and only requires a data connection such as WiFi or 3G. HeyWire can send/receive messages with ANY mobile device in USA and Canada. HeyWire can send/receive messages with MOST any mobile device in Mexico, the Caribbean, & South and Central America.

Picture Messaging is available for any number you can send text messages to.

You can also integrate your Twitter account to tweet and receive tweets into your HeyWire messages.

Auto Reply will automatically respond to your friends when you can’t text back. (i.e. when you’re on a plane, driving, or don’t want to be bothered).

Is it really free?

HeyWire offers completely free texting to any mobile number by using the internet to send texts.* It doesn’t matter if you’re texting a HeyWire number or another US-based mobile number.

The only connection HeyWire has with your phone bill is your data usage, because HeyWire requires a WiFI or 3G data connection. HeyWire text messages won’t show up on your phone bill.

Non-HeyWire users incur standard text messaging rates from their mobile operator plan when they text a HeyWire number, and all mobile numbers outside the US will incur international rates when replying to a HeyWire number, so if friends are concerned about incurring charges for texting, tell them about HeyWire! HeyWire to HeyWire texting is always free, unlimited and available worldwide!

*Some foreign carriers decline to support HeyWire.

Download and Sign Up

Welcome to HeyWire!

All you need to get started with HeyWire is to download and install the app.

For iOS: Open the Apple iTunes App Store and search for HeyWire. Download the app onto your device and it will be automatically installed.

For Android: Open the Google Play Store and search for HeyWire. Download the app and wait for it to install. Heywire will appear in your app tray. At this point you may drag and move it onto your phone’s home screen for easier access.

Once Heywire is downloaded and installed to your device, open it and follow the on-screen prompts to acquire a HeyWire number and create your account. You can set your password and other profile information in the app’s settings.

After you create an account, you can access your messages online at app.heywire.com, but you can’t create an account online – you need to download the app to a phone or tablet first to complete registration.

Tip: Your email is the primary way to re-gain access to your HeyWire account should you forget your password, so make sure it’s a current and valid address.

Supported Mobile Phones:
-iOS devices with version 6.0 or later
-Android devices with version 4.0 or later
*Note: 3G, 4G, LTE, and Wi-Fi are supported.

App Acting Up? Troubleshooting Guide

Is your HeyWire app acting up? Here are a few tips to get it going again.

Check your network connection.
HeyWire requires an active internet connection to work. Try switching to a different WiFi network or ensuring that you can access the internet from your device’s browser. Remember, your device can show bars even when an active connection isn’t available.

Check your HeyWire version and OS.

To see what OS your device is running, go into your device’s settings and find the “About” menu and look for your iOS or Android version. Our most recent release of HeyWire, as well as future updates, require Android 4.0 or iOS 7 and up. While older phones can still run an older version of HeyWire, it’s no longer supported, and users may run into problems that we have since fixed in more recent versions.

Uninstall and re-install HeyWire.
If you can, switch from cellular data to a Wifi connection which is generally more reliable.

For ANDROID:

1) Clear HeyWire Data – go to your Android’s settings, then apps, then HeyWire. Select “Clear Data” to clear all HeyWire data, and then select “Uninstall.
2) Restart your Android device.
3) Connect to Google Play and download the newest version of HeyWire.
4) Open HeyWire and log into your account. You may need to select “Returning User” if it prompts you to create an account.

For iOS:

1) Press and hold the HeyWire icon until it blinks and an (x) appears in the upper right corner. Tap the (x) to uninstall.
2) Turn your iPhone off, wait a moment, and power it back on.
3) Open the iTunes App store and re-download HeyWire.
4) Open HeyWire and log into your account. You may need to select “Returning User” if it prompts you to create an account.

Find My Friends

Find My Friends allows you to enter your current phone number and find friends who have texted you from Heywire, adding them to your address book for easy messaging.

To use, tap on the Contacts icon, and then on the Friends tab. If you have not yet verified your cell phone number, it will ask you to type it in. Then a verification code will be texted to your cell phone number. Enter that code in HeyWire, and any friends who have previously texted your cell phone from HeyWire will be added to your address book!

What if my code never arrives?

Occasionally, a carrier denies this verification code, and this feature won’t work properly; in this case, please ask your friends for their HeyWire numbers or import them through your phone’s contact book.

Contacts

Instead of having a separate contact list for you to manage, HeyWire reads your phone or tablet’s existing contact list. If you need to change, save or delete a contact, simply make that change in your phone or tablet’s contact list.

In iOS, the contact manager app is called “Contacts,” and the Google/Android contact manager is called “People.”

Upload your Contacts

Heywire will also upload your contact list to your account, so your contacts are available anywhere you use HeyWire, including at app.heywire.com. For both Android and iOS, this upload happens automatically once per day, so your HeyWire contacts will be up-to-date.

Accessing Contacts in iOS

If you didn’t give HeyWire permission to access your contacts when you installed the App, you can still get them to display by grating this permission now. On your phone (not in HeyWire):

  • Tap on Settings
  • Tap on Privacy
  • Tap on Contacts
  • Toggle HeyWire On

Then go back into the application and upload contacts.

Using HeyWire

Send a Text

Send a Text

Tap the message icon to compose a new message. Enter your recipient’s ten-digit phone number, or search by name if you’ve given Heywire permission to access your phone’s contacts.

MMS and Group Texting

HeyWire can send a single text to up to ten people – keep adding contacts in the “To” box until everyone is included, and then send your message. However, this won’t arrive as a group message; in other words, your recipients will see the message as only to them, and if they reply, it will go only to you. There is no MMS function in HeyWire due to inconsistent standards and a lack of regulation across different service providers.

See our page about Picture Messaging for more info on MMS.

Character Limits

You can compose a text message with up to 500 characters, but the messages will be delivered in 160-character “chunks” to meet industry standards and make sure the full message is received.

If you have set a signature, and the signature causes your message to go over 160 characters, the signature will be dropped. Twitter can only accept 140 characters.

Saving and Deleting Texts

HeyWire stores your text messages for about thirty days before they are no longer available. During that time, you can access your texts from your app, or online at app.heywire.com – they’ll be on every device no matter where you received it.

Saving Messages

You can email or message a transcript of a conversation to yourself from the app.

On iOS:

1. Find the conversation or message you would like to share and swipe left, revealing the option “More.”
2. Select “More,” and then select “Share.”
3. Choose the method you’d like to use: Mail, Message or other. A draft of your message will display and you can choose where to send it.

On Android:

1. Find the conversation or message you would like to share and press until a bar appears at the top.
2. On the right of this bar is the Android share icon. Tap the share icon and several options such as email, text or copy should appear.
3. Choose the method you’d like to use: Mail, Message or other. A draft of your message will display and you can choose where to send it.

You can also open your texts in a web browser at app.heywire.com, and then copy and paste the messages into a word document or other file to save.

Deleting Messages

Remember: deleting a message will permanently remove it from your history – so make sure you really want it gone!

iOS: swipe left over the message to reveal a “delete” button. Press that button to remove the conversation. To delete an individual message, hold your finger on the message until options appear above it, and then select “More.” The message will be selected, and you can tap the trash can in the bottom left corner of the screen to delete it.

Android: press and hold the conversation until a bar appears at the top of your screen with a trash icon in the upper right. Select the trash button to remove this conversation.

Web App: click the (X) next to any conversation stream and delete the message.

Picture Messages

You can send picture messages to any number you can send text messages to.

  • HeyWire to HeyWire can send and receive picture messages with no limitations
  • HeyWire to mobile number (non-HeyWire) can send messages which are displayed as a link.
  • Non-HeyWire numbers cannot send picture messages to HeyWire numbers.

There is no MMS functionality in HeyWire due to inconsistent standards and a lack of regulation across different service providers.

You can attach and send a picture only in JPG, PNG, GIF format with a maximum file size of 4MB. To attach a picture to a message tap the attachment icon and select from the following options:

  • Take Photo: take a photo using the camera of your mobile phone and tap Send*
  • Choose Existing: Tap to choose an existing photo from your album. Select the photo and tap send.

Having Trouble?

  • Check your network connection – HeyWire requires the internet to work!
  • Uninstall and re-install HeyWire
  • Close other apps

*Note: Take Photo functionality is available only in Android and iOS clients.

Voice Memo Texts

You can use HeyWire to record short voice messages and send them to your friends and co-workers

Voice messages can be sent to both HeyWire and non-HeyWire numbers – if the end user has HeyWire they will see a player inline that they can use to hear the recording. If they do not have HeyWire your recording will arrive as a link that the recipient can open to listen to.

iOS and Android devices

On the chat screen tap and hold the microphone icon in the bottom right corner. HeyWire will record up to 30 seconds of audio as long as you continue to hold down the button.

When you release the button your message will be sent.

To cancel, slide your finger to the left without lifting it up… recording will stop and the message will be discarded without being sent.

Additionally, you can quickly launch and record a Voice Text right from the messages screen by opening the Quick Launch bar and using the same method as above: hold to record, release to send, slide left to cancel.

Tweeting with HeyWire

From the HeyWire main menu, tap Tweet Now.

If you’ve never tweeted using HeyWire before, type Start and then tap Send. Twitter will respond with setup directions.

SMS Twitter Commands for HeyWire

Below is a complete list of Twitter SMS commands you can use in HeyWire:

ON: Turns ALL your Twitter updates and notifications on.
OFF: Turns off all updates except direct messages. Send STOP again to turn off direct messages, too.
ON username: Turns on notifications for a specific person. Example: ON John
OFF username: Turns on notifications for a specific person. Example: OFF John
FOLLOW username: Start following a specific user and receive SMS notifications. Example:FOLLOW Jessica
LEAVE username: Stop receiving SMS notifications for a specific user. Example: LEAVE Jessica
STOP, QUIT, END, CANCEL, or UNSUBSCRIBE: Turns ALL phone notifications from Twitter off.
STATS: Sends a text to you with the number of followers, how many people you’re following, and your bio information.

Password Recovery

Tap the “Reset Password” button in your app or at https://app.heywire.com, and we’ll send you an email with a password reset link.

We can only send your password to the email address on file, so if you signed up with a different email or your email has a typo in it, we won’t be able to reset your password. Your account will recycle after about thirty days of inactivity; after it recycles, you can re-install HeyWire for a new account.

Didn’t Get The Email?
If the email doesn’t arrive, check to see if it’s caught in your spam folder. Otherwise, it may be that you registered with a different email address or that there is a typo in your email address. Unfortunately, if you can’t access the email account you used to signed up for HeyWire, then you won’t be able to receive a password reset. Instead, you can get a new number: after approximately thirty days of inactivity, your account will recycle. At that time you can re-install HeyWire to get a new number.

Don’t Recognize The Email Address?
Heywire numbers are in high demand, so if you don’t use your HeyWire account for more than 30 days, it’s recycled into our system and closed. At that point, the number can be distributed to a new user, which is why you may see a foreign email address. To get a new Heywire number, please uninstall and reinstall Heywire, and then register as a new user.

Logging Out

There is no option to log out of Heywire. Only one Heywire number may be registered to a device, so there is no need to log out of the application.

If your device was pre-owned, there may already be a Heywire number linked to it. You will need to wait for this account to recycle from this device before you can create a new number.

Forgotten HeyWire Number

There are a couple ways to find your Heywire number:

1. If you can access the HeyWire app, open it. It will display your Heywire number either on the log-in page, or if you’re already logged in, your number will be listed in Settings.

2. Ask a friend who you have previously texted from Heywire -they may still have your number!

3. Go to app.heywire.com and click “forgot password.” Then, enter your email address to find your number.

If none of those options work for you, then you’ll have to create a new account with Heywire. Download the app from the iTunes or Google Play store, and sign up as a new user – we’ll give you a new number and you can get back to texting.

Update Email Address

You can update your email address in HeyWire’s settings:

1. iOS: press the arrow at the top of the screen in the app and find “settings.”
2. Android: tap the three dots in the upper-right corner and select “settings.”

Find the menu item “Profile,” and then “Email address” and update your information as needed.

Trying to recover your password?

HeyWire uses your email address to verify your account when resetting your password. If you don’t have access to the email account you used to register for HeyWire, we may not be able to reset your password.

To protect your privacy and security, we only make changes to an account if we’re contacted through the email address registered to the account.

Delete or Change Number

We do not manually delete accounts or HeyWire numbers, or change HeyWire numbers.

If you no longer wish to use HeyWire, simply uninstall the app and your account will be recycled after thirty days.

Common Questions

Authorization Issues on iOS

Some users are reporting an issue on iOS with Authorization: the screen will remain on “Authorizing” or give an error, preventing you from signing in.

Our engineers have fixed this issue and you should be able to log in now. If you are still experiencing issues, try to reinstall:

1) Press and hold the HeyWire icon until it blinks and an (x) appears in the upper right corner. Tap the (x) to uninstall.

2) Turn your iPhone off, wait a moment, and power it back on.

3) Open the iTunes App store and re-download HeyWire.

4) When it opens for the first time, select “returning user” or “existing user” instead of creating a new account. It will allow you to enter your number and password, and then you’re ready to text.

Thanks for going HeyWire!

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions we get about using HeyWire.

Do I need to be on Wi-Fi to use HeyWire?

HeyWire works by sending messages over the internet, so you must have an internet connection in order to use HeyWire. You can use Wi-Fi or your phone’s data connection.

Can I use HeyWire if my phone’s service has been shut off?

If your service has been shut off, you may not have access to your phone’s data connection and will have to access a Wi-Fi connection to use HeyWire. You can also access HeyWire from any computer connected to the internet by going to app.heywire.com!

Can I use HeyWire to text a non-HeyWire number?
Does my friend also need to have HeyWire to get a HeyWire message from me?

Your HeyWire number can text any US-or-Canada-based number, regardless of carrier. HeyWire can also receive messages from any US-or-Canada-based number.

* You can only receive pictures from other HeyWire users. More info on picture messaging.
** HeyWire can also be used to text non-US numbers, but some foreign carriers decline to support HeyWire. More info on International Coverage.

Will my friends be charged for texting my HeyWire number?

While you have limitless and free texting with HeyWire, your friends will still be charged based on their current service provider – they’ll be charged just as if you were texting from a regular cell phone number. If you’re concerned about it, encourage them to download and use HeyWire as well – then you’ll be sure that they won’t be charged for messaging you.

Can I use my existing phone number with HeyWire?

HeyWire provides you with a real and free US-based number for texting – there is no need or way to use an existing number to receive texts through HeyWire. Also, unlike your regular cell number, texts sent to your HeyWire are available across different platforms if you have multiple devices, and also online at app.heywire.com!

Can I use Short Codes with HeyWire? What is your Email to SMS gateway?

HeyWire does not use short codes – we provide our users with real, ten-digit numbers for texting, so we don’t have an email to sms gateway. You can send texts from any computer at app.heywire.com!

Privacy and Unwanted Texts

HeyWire does not tolerate inappropriate messaging behavior in our community.

If you are receiving unwanted texts, spam, abuse or otherwise need to report a number, please send an email to privacy@heywire.com, and include the phone number to investigate. We will look into the incident and let you know what steps we have taken.

If you feel that a situation is serious, we urge you to file a report with your local authorities.

While we can warn or deactivate an offending user’s account, we cannot file charges, provide you with user information or pursue further actions. This can only be done through law enforcement, and we cooperate completely with the authorities.

We cannot give out any user information to other users.

To comply with privacy and security standards, we can only provide information to law enforcement, and only after receiving the proper paperwork.

HeyWire and Data Usage

How much data does a text use?

Data usage will vary based on the size of the text, whether pictures or voice recording are sent, and other factors. Rather than estimate the size of a single text, there are ways you can watch and manage the amount of data HeyWire uses.

Generally, texting uses little data.

For Android

In your device’s settings, tap on Data Usage. Here you can view all of your apps and the data they use.

You can also tap “Set Mobile Data Limit” and move the orange and red lines to set a data usage alert, which will let you know when you are close to a limit, and a limit, which will prevent you from going over your data allowance.

For iOS

In your device’s settings, tap “Cellular Data” to view your usage. If you’re close to a limit, you can turn off Cellular Data for HeyWire and use only the WiFi.

Activating Other Services

Services such as WhatsApp, Viber, Google Voice and Line cannot be activated with HeyWire.

We don’t offer support assistance for activating these other apps or receiving their codes.

HeyWire is all about connecting you with your friends, without costs or limits, no matter where you are in the world. Thanks for going HeyWire!

Jailbroken or Rooted Devices

If your iPhone is unlocked or “jailbroken” and is not on the network of an official mobile operator we unfortunately cannot officially support your iPhone, and cannot guarantee proper performance with HeyWire.

Rooted Android devices should still work, but we won’t be able to guarantee proper performance or officially support your device.

Telefonica Ecuador and Telefonica Venezuela

Due to recent policy changes, the mobile carriers Telefonica Equador and Telefonica Venezuala will no longer support HeyWire texts. This means that HeyWire users sending texts to recipients on these networks will see their texts declined or fail to go through.

What you can do: If you frequently text with someone using these carriers, encourage them to download and use HeyWire. HeyWire works over the internet and does not rely on a mobile carrier, so you can text without costs or limits, regardless of country or carrier!

iOS 8 and Push Notifications

Thank you for upgrading! Occasionally, a download doesn’t install correctly and you may notice issues with a recurring Push Notification message. This can be fixed quickly with a reinstall. Please follow these steps carefully, even if you’ve already done this process to confirm you have a good download file. If you can, switch from cellular data to a Wifi connection which is generally more reliable.

To re-install HeyWire on iOS:

1) Press and hold the HeyWire icon until it blinks and an (x) appears in the upper right corner. Tap the (x) to uninstall.

2) Turn your iPhone off, wait a moment, and power it back on.

We hope you’ll enjoy the new layout, sleeker menu interface and the same reliable, free texting you love from HeyWire!

HeyWire on Nexus Tablets

We have had reports of Nexus tablets crashing since the latest HeyWire update. Our engineering team is aware of the issue and working hard on a solution, but for now there is a temporary workaround: disable Tablet Layout.

To disable Tablet Layout:
– Access the menu (tap the three dots in the upper right corner of HeyWire).
– Tap “Settings”
– Tap “Other”
– Tap “Advanced”
– UNCHECK Tablet Layout to disable it.

Please be sure to update HeyWire when a new release is available, and remember that our web-based app at app.heywire.com is a good alternative for accessing your texts and communicating with your friends. Once again, we appreciate your patience while we work on this issue. Thanks for using HeyWire!
